The Anwar Ibrahim sex video scandal erupted on 21 March 2011 when the full 21-minute recording of a black-and-white sex video was first aired to reporters at the prestigious Carcosa Seri Negara hotel by a man who identified himself as 'Datuk T'. The video began with footage of a man, said to be Anwar Ibrahim, a woman with apparently East Asian features, and another unidentified man in the room. The second part of the video, recorded from 4 slightly different angles, showed the man receiving oral sex from the woman and then having sexual intercourse with her in several positions. The video was allegedly recorded at a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur.[1]

2.  Youtube upload: On 28 April 2011, the unedited video had been uploaded to video-sharing website YouTube but was taken down shortly after, for violating the site's terms of usage.[2] The video-recording was divided into 4 parts and lasted approx. 4 min. and 28 sec. Prior to that, two "teasers" of the clip had also been uploaded to the same site.

3.  Motive for the recording: On 23 March 2011, the trio of Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik (former Melaka Chief Minister) and Datuk Shuib Lazim (Perkasa treasurer-general) came forward to reveal themselves collectively as "Datuk T" ("T" for "trio").[3] The following day, Rahim Thamby Chik said at a press conference that the video was exposed to show "a man who wants to be prime minister is not qualified". (In 1994, Rahim Thamby Chik was charged with statutory rape of a minor but the Public Prosecutor later withdrew the charge, citing lack of evidence.[4] Denying any involvement, Rahim nevertheless resigned from all political posts, following the allegations. He maintains that Anwar Ibrahim was behind his forced resignation.[4] )

4.  Authenticity of the tape: On 14 April 2011, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar declared the video as authentic, likely proving claims that the man featured in the 21-minute recording was indeed Anwar Ibrahim.[2] Ismail had said that the identity of the man was verified, based on strong evidence obtained during investigations, although he declined to identify the man in the video as he said it could interfere with ongoing investigations.

On 13 May 2011, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said that new findings have backed up earlier conclusions that the video had not been doctored: "We have received the report from foreign experts and from the report, it reaffirms our experts' findings about the authenticity of the video... that it is authentic, and not edited.[2] The police had earlier despatched a team to seek the assistance of experts from the United States to study the authenticity of the controversial video. "We have received the report from foreign experts and from the report it reaffirms our experts’ findings about the authenticity of the video... that it is authentic, and not edited", said Khalid Abu Bakar.

5.  Identity of people recorded in pornographic materials: Khalid Abu Bakar said current legislation does not require people recorded in pornographic materials to be exposed or charged, reiterating that the police were only investigating the public screening and distribution of the video under Section 292 of the Penal Code. However, he added, "If there is a need under the law [to identify the people in the video]... if the law requires us to disclose, then we will disclose", he said.

Shazryl Eskay Abdullah had earlier promised more exposes on Anwar Ibrahim once it is revealed the PKR de facto leader is in the 21-minute sex video which features a fair-skinned woman, believed to be a foreign prostitute. When pointed out however that the police had already declared they would not reveal the man's identity, unless compelled to do so, Shazryl reiterated that he was sure they would. "As I had mentioned earlier, let's give them a little time since they just got back from the US. I think they will make that announcement soon", he said in an SMS.[2]

6.  Sumpah laknat: On 29 April 2011, all 3 members of Datuk T completed the sumpah laknat (oath-cum-curse) ceremony at about 4.20pm at the Masjid Amru Al-As in Bandar Baru Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, appearing to be wearing bullet-proof vests under their clothes.[5] They had swore on Allah's name, declaring that they had spoken the truth when alleging that Anwar Ibrahim is the man in the video. Shazryl Eskay Abdullah's challenge to Anwar Ibrahim to do the same was, however, turned down.[2]  more... at Chronology
